s part of a membership engage-
ment initiative to create a platform
for direct interactive communica-
tion with our members, the Coun-
cil has planned to host a series of monthly mem-
bers’ forums in the coming months.
The purpose is to listen to your views, under-
stand your needs and at the same time explain
the strategic goals of the sixth long-range plan
and keep you updated on the activities of the
The forums will be free of charge and carry
one CPD hour for your participation. The leader-
ship team, together with members of the Coun-
cil, will attend and meet with you.
We have identified topics to coincide with our
long-range plan, including audit regulation and
professional liability reform, training and career
development support, communications and how
accountants can make a difference to society.
One of our ongoing contributions to society is
our annual submission on the government’s bud-
get. The financial secretary pays close attention
to our views and, as your president, I was invited
to the briefing on the day he gave his budget
speech last month.
The budget is also a great opportunity for me-
dia exposure, as journalists are eager to receive
comments from our taxation faculty executive
committee representatives. This recognition is the
accumulation of many years of our efforts with
hours of meetings, discussions, research and en-
gagement with members and stakeholders.
Our submissions go beyond Hong Kong. We
recently submitted two papers to the Interna-
tional Ethics Standards Board for Accountants
about its exposure drafts on responding to sus-
pected illegal acts and professional develop-
ment for audit engagement partners. We raised
critical concerns about the impact of the propos-
als on the profession. Please go to the Institute
website to see the full text.
Further, on the international front, we have
given support to the creation of the Accounting
Standards Advisory Forum under the aegis of
the IFRS Foundation. The forum aims to secure
a more streamlined dialogue between the Inter-
national Accounting Standards Board and the
global accounting standard-setting community.
It will be chaired by the IASB and has 12 other
members, all of which are national accounting
standard setters and regional bodies associated
with accounting standard setting. With our ex-
perience and stature, the Institute will actively
participate in this new group to ensure Hong
Kong’s views are reflected.
Following the highly acclaimed IFRS Founda-
tion Trustees meeting hosted by the Institute
in January, heavyweights from business, gov-
ernment and the profession in Hong Kong and
overseas will gather in June for the seventh IFRS
regional policy forum. That your Institute was
chosen to host such important global events
once again shows the strategic position of Hong
Kong in the world of accounting.
In its 40 years of history, the Institute has con-
tinued to achieve great things and will excel in the
years ahead with your support and participation.
“That your Institute
was chosen to host
global events once
again shows the
of Hong Kong in the
world of accounting.”
